Our Beginning
Scantron was founded in Los Angeles in 1972 by William E. Sanders, its first CEO and, Michael Sokolski, Executive Vice President of Engineering, who invented the Scantron Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) scanners and forms. These products have since become classroom staples around the world as students use their #2 pencils to fill in their “bubble sheets.”
Scantron was headquartered in Los Angeles until 2008 when it acquired a data management business and moved to Minneapolis/St. Paul. Coincidentally, our founder and original inventor both had early ties to Minnesota. Mr. Sokolski graduated from the University of Minnesota and worked at IBM in Rochester, MN, while Mr. Sanders worked for Minnesota-based 3M in the business products division. Today, we also have major offices in Omaha, NE; Raleigh-Durham, NC; and Columbia, PA.
